Mentoring

Thank you to all who have nominated to be part of the program. We have around forty participants from city and country locations. Currently we are matching participants and mentors and developing the program.  We will let you know in mid March. The first event will be held after the PLSA meeting on Tuesday 11 April, as an opportunity for everyone to meet - so book this in your diary today. We are looking forward to an eventful year with lots of ideas and enthusiasm exchanged across the state.

Congratulations

Congratulations to library teams at   Kangaroo Island celebrating 30 years of service and to Prospect Library for 25 years of services. Their recent celebrations were a huge success with their communities and wonderful recognition of the outstanding services they provide. Happy Birthday!

Expression of Interest - Interlibrary Loan Working Party
PLAIN is about to undertake a feasibility study to determine the future P2 interlibrary loans requirements and how this may interact with library inhouse systems. There are many options available for PLAIN to investigate but prior to going down any particular path, we need the input from users of the different library systems associated with our network.

The role of the working party will be to provide system information about the library system that they have.  Also to provide valued opinions and comments in regard to how the interlibrary loans should work in the future to provide a more efficient system.  If you would like to be involved in the future of the P2 system interlibrary loan requirements, please call me,  Chris Lewis on 83482375 or email lewis.chris@saugov.sa.gov.au and provide your name, library and library inhouse system name.

Wireless Pilot
PLAIN has recently held a meeting with technical specialists to determine the way forward for connecting Libraries with wireless technology.  A pilot to sample / try the technology will go ahead but  firstly details in relation to setting standards and protocols for setup and usage are to be determined. PCS will meet next week to outline some of the requirements and to identify where policy needs to be ratified by Libraries.     Keep watching this space for further information!

SMS - TXT2U Messaging
The recent success of the Onkaparinga Library Service's SMS implementation for 'holds' has led to many libraries expressing interest in having this setup for their library service.  To ensure that libraries are fully aware of the requirements to implement messaging, PLAIN are currently working on procedures documentation that will assist you in the decision making process. This document will be sent out to all Library Managers shortly so keep an eye out for the details.  If you are interested in expressing an interest to have the service setup, please email or call Chris Lewis at PLAIN on 8348 2375 or lewis.chris@plain.sa.gov.au

Network Access Servers
To help us to help you, please do not 'reset' your Network Access Servers (NAC's) when you have or are experiencing Internet issues.  Resetting the server clears all the system logging and prevents our technical support from determining the problem behind the outage.  In the past, prior to the network upgrade, this was an accepted option.  Since the upgrade, resetting without instruction from the support team at PLAIN or from the technical support (ADC) directly is definately not advised.  If you need further information please contact the helpdesk on the above email address.

YAHOO!
Many libraries have been reporting problems with access to YAHOO mail and on some occasions the website itself.  The Support Team have spent extensive time researching the issues and determining
the origin of the problems.  While it appears that the issues are isolated to the PLAIN network, this is not the case.  The problem is wide spread and has been for some time.  The following site provides some advice and alternative YAHOO addresses that can be tried instead of your usual link:

http://www.murraymoffatt.com/software-problem-0011.html

Some users have reported success by trying the alternative URL's.  However, if this still fails you might like to try reporting the issue to YAHOO Help by doing the following:

http://help.yahoo.com/

Type in a question and select ask.

If the answer is of no help, highlight “Not even close!” and select submit.

A popup for your comments/feedback will appear, don’t forget to enter your details

Unfortunately PLAIN Support is not able to assist any further with this problem so please feel free to ask your users to log the problem with YAHOO Help.

Interlibrary Loans

Frequently asked question 1 - Why does the same date appear in more than one field when viewing the Interlibrary Loan Request Details ?

Answer - This occurs when one of the libraries (or sometimes both) have failed to circulate the item after accepting the request.  When the item has not been circulated, the field will remain blank until the next time the item is circulated (scanned) by either library location.

In the example below, it appears that the request was 'accepted' but not circulated out to the requesting library. The requesting library probably never saw the book and when it returned home to its owner location and was circulated in, the P2 system automatically populated all the previous dates that were missing.  Ie, item was not issued, received, returned but when it was scanned home, the dates all populated with the same date that the request was completed.

P2 uses many of these date fields to determine background system functions and therefore, is designed to populate all missing dates at any time through the ILL process.

Still confused or want more information ? Please refer to the Interlibrary Loans Procedures found on the PLAIN Intranet website at http://plnintra.plain.net.au/entry.htm

Frequently asked question 2 - I 'rejected' an interlibrary loan and the book came in that same afternoon.  Should I still send it ?

Answer - No.  The request does not reside at your location anymore and will have moved immediately to the next available location.  There is no way on the system that you can circulate that loan to the requesting library.  Sending the item without circulating it will simply confuse the requesting library as they may well receive a copy from another location that 'accepted' the request.
Once you have 'rejected' an ILL request, you no longer have the ability to change your mind.

Children's Book Week - Special Selection List
The Children's Book Council Shortlist will be announced on Tuesday 5 April (usually late in the day). PLAIN will create a special selection list of all the titles (usually about 20) and plan to open it late on Wed 6th April. The list will remain open until Sun 17th April.

Often the increased demand created by the potential winners results in titles requiring reprinting.  Our supplier will fast-track the order to the publishers and PLAIN will be liaising closely with the supplier to make every effort to meet the order requirements.

The supplier will indicate which books are from the CBC Shortlist so they can be easily identified in your black boxes.

This year, Children's Book Week is August 20-26.

Kangaroo Island Library Service

Holiday Fun @ Memorial Park

The Kangaroo Island Library began its celebration of 30 years of public library service to the Kangaroo Island community on Friday 28th January 2005.  As the KI Library is extremely limited in space, the library staff decided to celebrate out of doors with a family fun day at Memorial Park. And what a day we had!

Over 300 children, parents and grandparents enjoyed Kite making and flying, Bocce, Mini Golf, Quoits, Storytelling, Face painting and Craft for Kids. Advanced Kingscote ran a Sausage Sizzle, the Lions Club of Western KI provided tea, coffee and cold drinks, as well as delicious hot donuts, the Friends ran a Book sale and raffle and the Lions Club of KI ran their train free of charge.

Down Dauncey Street , businesses decorated their windows with a “Celebrate with books” theme. Winnie the Pooh was surrounded by KII Honey in the window of the local IGA store, while Shakespeare graced the Chemist window, and novels, craft and travel books where promoted in other windows. Street Banners where placed outside the library and a display of newspaper articles on the Institute and public library from the last 100 years was on view in the library.

My thanks to Alan Smith, Director of the State Library for his tremendous support in blowing up balloons for the children as well as serving birthday cake, and  to Teresa for all the freebies that filled our Treasure Bags. The Mayor held a Dinner in the evening attended by special guests Paul Crawford, Allan Smith and Tania Paull. The Dinner was the Mayor’s way of thanking Councillors, the Friends of the Library and the community for their support of the library over the last 30 years.

The day was a fantastic success, and the launch of Kangaroo Island Library Service’s 30 year Celebration. Our celebrations will continue throughout 2005 with a literary evening in May, Children’s Book Week in August, a literary luncheon in October, holiday activities on each  Monday morning of the school holidays and a library staff reunion in December.

MUSICAL SPECTACULAR GREAT FUN!

Whyalla Public Libraries January School Holiday Program “Musical Spectacular” was a huge success, with all children attending having a fantastic time. The children made various musical instruments, including a drum, shakers and graters, and learnt how to play the recorder. The children also listened to the music that our talented visitors played, including a key board, clairinet, guitar. The program concluded with a musical parade through Civic Library and along Patterson Street by children, parents and library staff and a performance on the Council Chambers balcony to the audience, which was a LOT of fun!

Port Adelaide Enfield Public Library Service

 just ask @ your library

For the month of February the PAEPLS decided to promote on-line resources and data-bases and take advantage of the great offer from the State Library and host their Roadshow. We tried something a little different and aimed the program mostly at the public with 3 sites hosting what we called Program One and our two Local History sites hosting Program Two.

Program One: Searching the Internet/The State Library

10.00am  – 12.00noon: Internet searching – a basic introduction to searching and selected databases.

1.00pm   – 2.30pm: On-line with the State Library – a guided tour of the State

Library’s resources rich web site and it’s associated databases and publications.

At the following branches:

Semaphore Library, Thursday Feb. 3

Greenacres Library, Monday Fe. 7

The Parks Library, Friday Feb. 11

Program Two: Family History

10.00am – 11.00am: An introduction to the State Library’s Family History Resources

11.15am – 12.45am: Family History on-line.

2.00pm    4.30pm : Family History Clinic – book into a one-on-one session with the expert and receive help in researching your family’s history.

At the following branches:

Port Adelaide Library, Friday Feb. 4

Enfield Library, Thursday Feb. 10

My thanks go particularly to Stamos Ganiaris from the State Library for his tireless work in getting the program off the ground with very little notice.

Unfortunately my plans did not work out as well as I would have hoped and response from the public, for the General Internet sessions, was not good. We ended up opening the sessions to staff and their responses have been extremely positive. Praising Stamos for being a good presenter and feeling they have learned a lot from the sessions.

Maureen Driver has taken the Family History sessions. Here the public response has been  better and we managed to get some staff along to attend, also. Everyone has said that the sessions were extremely interesting and useful. So thanks also to Maureen.

In retrospect I think we tried to do this program in the wrong month. It was very hard to get out publicity with the first Council newsletter of the year going out after the actual program and with many staff on leave. While I think it’s great for our Library Service to participate in just ask @ you library, I think to do this theme justice I would prefer if it could be moved to another month, later in the year, so that more preparation time can be put into the activities. However I would recommend to any site or service to investigate the Road show. It is certainly worth hosting.

Charles Sturt Library Service

Afternoon Quiz Delights at Charles Sturt

The Charles Sturt Library Service has, for several months, been conducting a regular Quiz at its Civic and Findon Libraries. The always bright and breezy sessions are designed to provide that little something extra for the customers and already attendances at each Quiz are significant. Pictured at a recent Civic Library Quiz are Quizmaster Stephen Turner, “the boy who holds the barrel” CEO Peter Lockett and, in the background, Library Manager Pippa Webb. A29_DSCN0490.JPG (76638 bytes)

Stephen is the star of the show as he facilitates question and answer sessions and to help him with this task a Staff member is invited to be his “Prince” or “Princess” for the day, donning a tiara or other headgear. Their role is to hand out the prizes, which might include chocolate bars, small toys, bracelets, socks, mini cereal packets and discount movie vouchers to the winners. Each session generates heaps of fun and fits in very nicely to one of the City’s Corporate Values - “We will create a pleasant and enjoyable working environment with satisfying jobs and we will have fun and celebrate our success”.

The questions asked of Quiz contestants are of a general nature but also provide a method of promoting Council/Library services, events, issues and facilities. Those participating have tended to thrive on a happy, stimulating atmosphere and the social interaction which occurs is delightful amongst individuals who otherwise might come and go without uttering a word. The Quiz and its questions also become excellent “ice-breakers” for many a conversation between staff and customer. A particularly good story is one where an anxious customer dealing with an account and its associated fine, transformed immediately into a happier frame of mind on being able to correctly answer one of the Quiz questions.

Apart from bringing more customers of all ages through the door and introducing them to the wonderful world of libraries and all they have to offer, Library Staff have also enjoyed the added interaction with the Council Administration. Amongst a host of guest assistants, an appearance from the CEO (otherwise known as ‘King’ Peter), and one soon by the Mayor (3 March) have ensured that all levels of Council are represented. The Library has indeed assumed yet another personality. It’s fresh and a little unusual and already an institution!

For those wishing to see how the Quiz sessions are conducted, call into the Findon Library on Tuesdays and Civic Library on Thursdays and Fridays at 4pm to see how it’s done. A Weekly Wednesday Quiz will also be starting at West Lakes on Wednesday 2 March 2005. For more detail if you can’t make it, please call Laurie McCann on 84081333.

Adelaide Hills Library Service

Dads @ the Library

Over the summer school holidays Adelaide Hills trialled Dads @ the Library, a new program for toddlers in which we invited ‘dads, granddads, uncles and brothers’ to read stories to pre-schoolers on Thursday evenings. Volunteers to read included the Mayor, Council staff, parents of our after school shelvers, and library users. All those involved had great fun with some amazing talent emerging in our guest readers.A37 Dads storytime.JPG (124968 bytes)

The idea for Dads @ the Library began in our one-off ‘Night Time Story Time’ complete with pyjamaed staff and some brave parents. Fathers who came mentioned that it was wonderful to have the opportunity to participate as work commitments precluded them from our usual toddler story times.  From contemplation of regular evening story times we then moved on to consider that all our library staff involved in story telling are female, that more women than men use libraries, that children benefit from both parents reading to them, and that there are children in the community who do not have male role models readily available to them.

Ergo – a program which resulted in some very excited and involved children and the emergence of some amazing talents in our guest readers whilst also promoting the value of reading to children by mums and dads.

Writers in the Park

Paradise for book lovers – an autumn afternoon in a beautiful park listening to local authors discuss books and writing.

Where better to be on Sunday 20 March than on the lawns fronting the Coventry Memorial Library and Stirling Service Centre, listening to Amanda Graham, Rosanne Hawke, Ian Bone, Stephen Orr, Cath Keneally, Stefan Laszczuk and Lydia Laube range across traveller’s tales, children’s literature and the second novel syndrome.

Starting at 2 pm , Writers in the Park is free with no bookings required. There will be a marquee with seating for 200 – but rugs, chairs, picnics are all welcome. Matilda Bookshop – co-sponsor with Wakefield Press and SA Writers Centre – will have books available for purchase and signing.

Please pray for a fine day!!

Port Pirie Housebound Christmas Morning Tea

Thursday the 18th of December was the day for the Housebound Christmas Morning Tea, and what a great day it was.

Patrons who are a part of our Housebound Delivery Service from both Port Pirie and c2.0062.jpg (100532 bytes)Crystal Brook were chauffeured to the library in buses and cars to enjoy a wonderful morning of carol singers, sponge cake, cups of tea, and even a visit from Father Christmas.c2.0066.jpg (86547 bytes)

Our housebound patrons didn’t go home empty handed.  They received a lovely plate of homemade goodies, made by the staff.  This have become an annual event in our library and our patrons just love it.

  Community Education and Liaison Coordinator

Hi, my name is Nel Fredericks (pictured below) and I’m the Coordinator of Community Education and Liaison at The State Library (the new Shane Cathcart!). Part of my job is to work out how State Library staff can help you at your library. Nel Fredericks.jpg (24286 bytes)

Last year I organised forums for library staff about services for people with disabilities and Indigenous information issues. In 2005 we’re planning to put together a forum about digitising your collection. If you think of a topic that would be of interest to your library, let me know!

The Community Education and Liaison Team also presents the State Library Roadshow (Stamos Ganiaris pictured below). We can come out to your library and provide stamos@salisbury.jpg (31841 bytes) training for staff and public about State Library services, reference interview skills, family history, internet searching, Ebsco and Gale databases or just about anything that would benefit your staff. We can come for half a day at a time or for a few days in a row- whatever you need. Give me a call and we’ll see what we can do together.

I look forward to meeting you all.

Marketing Update

Premier's Reading Challenge Update

One of the information sheets for the year lists what is happening for the Premier's Reading Challenge in 2005.  Make note of the website http://www.premiersreadingchallenge.sa.edu.au/prc/pages/books/sitemap .  It has been shortened to the following address www.prc.sa.edu.au, though the old address will still take your there.

There will be less updates this year.  The main one being for Children's Bookweek.  Graphic novels have also been included into the challenge.

PLAIN Central Services will be ordering and distributing Premier's Reading Challenge stickers to all library services.  Look for these in the black box in the next few weeks.

2005 Stickers - New Book Promotions

An initative of the marketing committee has been to produce New Book 2005  purple stickers. The feedback from library staff and customers has been very positive. The stickers have been very useful in dispelling the myth that libraries are stocked with old books and highlights new items in the library.  Some libraries have produced their own customised stickers as a great way of promoting their library service.  Stickers have been distributed via the Toll courier.  If you haven't received them please contact Tyson on 8348 2311 and he will send you some.

For further information contact Teresa Brook at brook.teresa@saugov.sa.gov.au

Consortia Purchase of Library Bags

We have had a great response to the consortia purchase of library bags and will be ordering 15,250 library bags.  Due to the varying logo requirements and specifications, the ordering process has been challenging.  However a very cost effective price has been negotiated. PLAIN Central Services will invoice Councils and we are currently discussing delivery with Toll.  The expected delivery date will be late March.  Please call Teresa if you require any further information.
